    I have a 2001 e39 m5 and its up for mot on wed and I have it with two garages to try and sort out the dash lights.When you turn her on and turn the lights on everything works but the lights that come on behind the spedo and light up the heater controls don't come on I have alredy replaced the control switch with a brand new one and a mate had them turned on with a computer so they work could some one help me.

    Hi,

    Did you manage to sort out your dash problem as my 52 plate 525d has just suffered the same problem

    I know a similar fault that can happen on other BMW's is that the illuminated gear knob can be the source of the problems (the wires are prone to chaffing and this will ground out).. not sure if the M5 had an illuminated gear knob?? - but given how common this is on other models - it's probably where I'd start.. then I'd pull the cluster and check connections/bare wires...

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply. If the wires ground out does it not take out the fuse? I have checked all mine & they are fine, I also replaced the light switch but as it didn't slove the problem I replaced the dimmer switch as well but no joy. When you say about the illuminated gear knob do you mean the gear selector lights as mine is an auto box

    Have you taken out the clocks, as there are small bulbs contained with in the unit, a good motor factors will have these
