The heated rear screen on our 318 touring has packed up (actually never worked since we bought it). When I press the switch it lights up but power is not getting to the heating element. I have checked the fuse and cleaned up the earths on the tailgate and the actual tracks themselves look OK.

    Cheers,
    Chrisall

Check the wires where they go through from the tail gate to the car, they often break, if you can use a test light on the rear of the switch to determine whether you have power coming out of the switch.

Also could you remember to add the vehicle details in the thread title next time as per forum rules please, they have been done for you this time. 2001 318i e46

    Thanks for the replies.

I had a look on the WDS and found the location of the defogger relay, ripped out half of the trim to get to it - tested & it was fine, then checked the continuity from the relay to the screen.....at which point I noticed the evenly-spaced marks on the left-hand side rubber seal, which led me to the heating elements themselves - every one of them broken under the mask where they touch the seal. Have since seen other posts describing the very same issue and suggesting a brick through the glass+insurance excess as a possible cure. I think I will get some of that electrocure paint and see if that does the trick.

    Cheers,
    Chrisall.
