I have the exact same thing. When I indicate left it will sometimes flash fast like a bulb has gone but all the bulbs are fine and have been replaced with no effect.

My indicators also don't self-cancel. I have to turn the indicator off manually regardless of which way I indicate. I thought these issues may be related, do your indicators still self-cancel?

I had this problem on my e46 325ci about three months ago. Replaced the wiring in my rear lighting cluster as one of the contacts was degraded. If you unplug the wires from the back light and look down into the contacts you might have a degraded one too. It sorted it for me. Hope this helps and good luck.

What relay? E46 models don't have one ...LCM or stalk switch is my guess. Then again, fwabbly and chopper are onto something there as well

if they dont self cancell and they are clicking at odd intervals the stalk may be worn.

that goes for all, or either of the faults. could also be a bad connection/earth or sticking relay (flasher relay maybe?)
