yesterday i swapped my rear lamps on my w reg 318 with the clear lamps of a o2 plate 318. the lights are working fine for about 5 mins and then the o/s goes dull and the 2 lower lights go off. also the bulb warning lights are on on the dash. is there anything i can do to resolve the problem, like fit a resistor or something or are the just not comptible, any help would be appreciated, cheers

Check the ground wire on both lamps. (The heavier gauge brown wire) They have a habit of overheating due to a poor connection which damages the terminal on the lamp unit and the connector itself. Don't know about the compatability issue.

Thanks r101. I had to change the lamp connections as they where different from the originals(one had six connections the new lamps have seven).I have browsed other forums and because they are genuine lamps I have to run additional wires to the light switch and get it programmed at a dealer( bummer.) if anybody thinks otherwise I would be glad to hear from you, cheers

I dont believe that you can facelift the 02plate clusters into the earlier cars, I cant remember seeing anything in the retrofit section of the BMW programming software. Some models you could retrofit LED rear lamps but off the top of my head I dont think what you are saying can be done. Im not back at work for a fortnight either so cant check up on it for you.
