    Hi guys,

Normally, when the ignition is switched on on my wifes car, you can hear the headlamps cycling through their adjuster range (up and down for about 1 sec). I have noticed today that this has stopped, and i can no longer adjust the headlight level from the thumbwheel on the dash.

Does anybody know what to check for? ive looked through the fuses and cannot find one which relates to this?

    cheers

I'm pretty certain there are no traditional fuses on an e46 for the headlights. All the control and monitoring for shorts/bulb-out is done by the light switch module (LSZ). This module also controls the adjustment stepper motors, if both have stopped doing their sweep at turn on then maybe that part of the LSZ module has gone bad. You could (temporarily) swap the LSZ for a used module from eBay/scrappy to rule the LSZ out.(you will get odometer tamper dot but will go away if old module put back)
You can view the wiring diagrams from info here, but it's a pretty steep learning curve to make sense of it all!
