    My 318i,year 2000 has been diagnosed with the following fault - 05 pressure actuator 5 open circuit/short circuit - does anyone know what this involves?

    You sure it's a 318i saloon e36? as they finished making them in 1998.

    Got to be a e46. What scanner did the code come from?

    sorry, you're right it is e46, I don't know what the scanner was, local garage, the guy seemed to know what he was doing. The problem with the car is shift electronics warning
    light is on and won't kick down, (limp mode?)

    I've moved your thread to the Auto Electrical forum dr1209 .

    That code relates to a solenoid problem in the Auto gearbox, your best bet will be taking the car to a auto gearbox specialists.

    Was the fault code cleared? if so I presume it came back up once driven?

    Any other gearbox problems?

    It could be a solenoid fault, wiring fault, alternator issue(but unlikely as you should have a fault code come up for voltage high or low) or even a ECU fault.
