Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has had following problem: I noticed sometime ago that there is little oil spitting on the engine block. This only happens when revs go higher than 4K. It is not a huge amount but you can smell the burning. There is no excessive smoke from the exhaust, no leaks under the car, no overheating of the engine on long journeys. Had it checked out in a garage and they couldn't tell me where it may be coming from. It's an automatic, so when I start it cold the revs go up to 1K and sometimes start falling down to ~500-800 with some vibrations from the engine (may be related : ). Anyways, friends of mine said it may be a head gasket problem...expensive. Any thoughts will be much appreciated

common problem on the E46 and other BMWs is the cam cover gasket leaks on the exhaust side and drips on the manifold then burns off so you will not see any drips under the car
replace the gasket and use some high temp silicon too but do not over tighten the bolts as the head is alloy and will strip the threads

Thanks for that Payno, Had full service done on it in Feb. Engine flush, new oil, oil filter etc... Had to add a litre of oil in her a few days and that brought the level to three quarter on the dipstick. I am fairly certain it was filled fully when they did the service in Feb...That's a lot burned I think..
