    nope thats a level switch..


    face facts if its running all the time your gonna have to replace the fan unit complete unless you know a good electronics expert..

    so a whole new fan unit is needed. I just thought id try the smaller thing's first instead of diving in at the deep end and spending daft amount of money on a fan and it still give's me the same as what i have got now

    doggy maybe ive been barking up the wrong tree so the e46 has no rad fan switch is this correct if so i take it ecu switches it on and off as required so how does ecu know when to turn on and off

    correct its a infinitely variable speed fan unit, signal controlled by the ECU via the engine temp probes data..

    the switching and speed circuitry for the fan is part of the fan unit itself as mentioned earlier..

    common faults it dosent work at all or it works all the time if its fused itself on the control circuitry in the on position...

    take it a bmw garage they will try it with another fan unit usually off another car. or if you have a mate with an e46 its only a 2 minute job to remove the fan unit...
    330i sport a big chunk of berlin...

    Just spoke to my mate who has a 318, going to plug his fan in and see what happen's this weekend coming. See what happen's and hopefully will let me sort this out
