    Hi,

After disconnecting the battery for a period to resurrect ailing injectors amongst other things, my tailgate now has joined in the general melee by refusing to open without manual intervention. (hasnt worked since battery disconnect)

I have bought a new actuator (ouch) only to find that this is not the problem.

All other tailgate funcitons are normal - including the soft close mechnaism on the tail gate, the glass window mechanisms, brake light, washers etc. plugging in the actuator triggers the soft close spindle etc. it just simply wont operate the latch-arm to open the gate. I've read tons of cases where there are broken wires further up the loom - but surely there would other symptoms i this was the case.

Although I am fairly handy DIY wise electronics are a sweet mystery - if anyone can walk me idiot fashion through how to diagnose this, I'd be the most grateful man in the world. I have nearly rebuilt this car from spare parts since I bought it less than three months ago following issue after issue and am gutted to have yet another problem....I cant face taking it to a garage - the drive of shame would finish me, let alone the bill.

    Thanks!!

Oh - great forums by the way - this is my first post :-)

Have you checked the locking motor that sits behind the actuator?

Part of the "black box" that bolts to the lock? I assumed this was the piece that had gone and bought a new one from the BMW dealership......unless I am thinking of the wrong piece?

That would be the actuator. I was thinking more of the actuator control which is a motor...no 4 below

So that means you can hear the actuator working, right?

Thanks for your patience.....what happens is..... I can open and close the glass part of the tailgate with no probs. If I try and open tailgate, using keyfob or button in cabin, the soft close mechanism whirrs (04 in diagram), tailgate is pulled towards the car.....but the latch actuator (0) does not pull the catch so the gate doesnt open. To correct, I have to release the latch manually using the toggle (3)

the actuator (4) makes no sign of working - can;t be the actuator itself though, as I have a brand spanking new one. interestingly, the soft-close spindle whirrs when I connect the actuator, so at least one wire is connecting properly.

Ok, in that case, you might want to check the wiring and connector from the actuator to the motor because it sounds like that is your problem.
