can some one please give me any ideas why the rear high level brake light in my x reg 530D wouldn't be working? On the dash the light for the right hand side rear light is on, but only the high level not working. the fuse has been checked and a new bulb tried with no joy.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Ben

Test with a test lamp or meter for voltage at the plug connector at the light. Check the bulb is making a good clean connection in the fitting. Do this for all the brake light bulbs.
The fuse is no. 41 but it may be worth checking nos. 16, 112 and 113.
Otherwise, make sure the plug connectors are seated correctly at the light module which I think is at the side of one of the footwells.
The +ve wire for the raised brake light is black/grey and the earth is brown. The earth is connected to the bodywork in the boot under the rear window shelf.

    Hi

I had same thing firstly the holder had melted, the contact for the negative on the bulb had melted the plastic, fixed this was okay for a week then same problem thought must be holder checked it was ok in the sense good contact with bulb, but tested for power none!

eventualy found the positive wire had a break in it maybe 1" from the bulb holder could be with the heat?, had become brittle and with me moving it around while fixing the holder may have frayed it until it just gave up,

cut the wire back a bit further added some new stuff and soldered together all ok now!

I would do continuity test from negative of bulb holder to ground point ( any bolt or screw in the boot) and also test positive to the fuse for the high brake light (if its on its own) or to the positive of the rear right brake light to make sure its not a conductor fault.

    hopefully this will fix it!!

    regards

    mud

I have checked wires but no obvious break, my holder was melted as well I am not sure if my tester is working as I cannot get any "light" indication from it?
