Asking on behalf of a mate. I'm pretty sure his is an E36 but please correct me if I'm wrong. The car is a 2000(w) 316i (1.9litre).

    To quote his email:

"...discovered last night that my brake lights are out. This coincides with the clock on the dash stopping working when the lights are off."

I'm going to pop over at lunchtime but does anyone have any initial thoughts? I had an issue with the brakelights failing on my old Leon and it was down to the switch behind the brake pedal... could this be a similar problem?

    Cheers,

    Steve

Anyway, I've done a search on another forum and it looks like it's likely to be the brake light switch (although I'm still confused about how it is effecting the clock - hopefully all will become clear later).

Possibly the brake switch - Could even be a fuse... Won't explain the clock though.

Also, check the wiring coming from the body and going into the boot lid, if they break, they can cause some really strange things to occur. Not sure if this problem exists on the Compact, but worth a check anyway !

Thanks guys. If it does turn out to be the brake switch is it easy to pull out or will I need to lay my hands on some tools? I know the one in my cupra R just clipped in but my BMW experience suggests that nothing is ever simple (or is that just 'cos I drive an 8!?)

Had a look at lunchtime. The fuse was blown so we replaced it and the next one blew as well. Would a faulty switch cause this or could it be another issue? (As the switch is fairly in-expensive I think he's going to try one anyway... I'm just curious).

Seemed ok to look at but, being at work, we haven't been able to check the voltage yet.
