Thanks for positive suggestions. Don't hear fuel pump prime but then I never have noticed fuel pump noise. Ignition system and dashboard lights are totally dead when problem occurs. Just when I am about to call breakdown recovery, I turn key and everything starts normally and all is OK for a day or maybe two -before it reoccurs. When ignition switch has been replaced, then I am OK again for maybe 1-2 years before it starts again!!! i.e. When I am totally offguard, I insert the key and find the system dead - no dashboard "ignition" lights -although central locking and car lights working normally . Wny does replacement of ignition switch solve problem for 1-2 years???

So this has happened 3 times in 4 years. Has the dealer ever seen it not working?
If on average it happens every 16 months, then clears before the dealer sees it and they then change the ignition switch, how do we know the switch makes any difference as it may not have happened again for another number of months anyway.
Or is it the case that when the fault appears, it happens almost continuously until a switch is fitted?
Just a suggestion to try and help the thought process

Fault happens regularly (like every day or so) until ignition switch changed and then car fine again. Dealer has never seen fault although tried over a whole day to get fault when trying to start car.

Now a week since ignition switch replaced (3rd time) and no reoccurence but who knows how many months it will last or maybe permanently if NealP is right about a faulty batch of switches.

It sounds like one of these faults that may not be easy to guess at, but should be easy to eliminate components such as the ignition switch/wiring if only the sparky could get a hold of the car with the fault present.
Fingers crossed it doesn't come back

Many thanks gildersol. Will hope for the best. Clearly not an easy one to diagnose.
