Three times in the last 4 years I have turned the ignition key only to find ignition system totally dead - no lights on dashboard (but central locking and car lights all fine). After several attempts to start with no success - suddenly the electrics return and dashboard indicators lights and all is normal - but only for a day or two when the fault reoccurs.
BMW garage can find no fault but have replaced ignition switch 3 times in total - after which all has been perfect again for anything from 9 months to 2/3 years.
Anyone got any ideas, please because I am having to pay. BMW Service say they cannot replace ignition switch under warranty as they have found no fault but replacing it seems to fix the fault but not permanently!
They ask if I have heavy bunch of keys (which I don't). Why could new ignition switch fix problem for a year or two?
Appreciate any ideas as I never know when it will reoccur
