Hi, i am asking for some help on behalf of my dad, he has a bmw 523 ise on a 2000 plate, the cigarette lighter has stopped working, the red light around the outside still lights up and we have checked the fuse in the glovebox which is fine, he has to use the cigarette socket for his sat nav, tyre inflater etc but nothing works in it, does anyone have any suggestions of how to fix it without having to go to the garage?? thanks in advance

If you have a multimeter make sure there is power to the centre of the socket.

Be careful not to short the probe out on the side which is earth, you can use that point to check for the live if you get nothing then use another earth point as it could be a bad earth on the socket.

As above, check for power. Was that fuse no. 7 you checked. That is for later year 2000 cars, for earlier ones it can be fuse 52 which is in the boot behind the side trim
