hi i am new to this forum,

    my problem

sometimes when i brake i have no break lights, other time's they flicker then sometimes there fine, i am worried as this is very dangerous but cant be without my car

i know about the common fault (brake light switch) and have replaced this with a second hand one from a scrappy
but still the problem persists so i put originall switch back, work fine for all of 10 minutes now i back to square one

    please help me

    thanks in advance

This might help but im not sure...

Try open the boot and you will see a wiring loom that bends when you open and shut the boot lid. Cut it open "be very careful" and look for broken wires. If you find one add the same type of wire in and solder it.

I had this problem with my P reg 318i it is an easy fix just be sure to take your time as wires can brake internally.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

It does sound like the switch to me, have you bridged the wires, as to make the lights on all the time, you my have been unlucky with your 2nd hand switch

Kicking under the dash won't jog the boot lid wiring so if kicking it does really make a difference sounds like switch or wiring not secure to it (or other general loose something or other fault

That is what happened to my 318, Having faulty wiring anywhere in the loom can sometimes cause problem elsewhere. I may be wrong but its well worth a go as you cant do no harm and you might as well check it out as the loom in the boot lid aways has a broken wire sooner or later. Cut it open carefully, check it then use black tape to seal it all in again.

Kicking the side of the dash in the drivers footwell! If there is a problem there thats not the switch then I would check out the wiring loom that run from the front of the car to the rear. It sounds like there is a lose or broken connection somewhere.

Anyone else there have any ideas???
