hi everyone just wondering if anyone can help. i have a 5 series BMW with a problem with ABS light that comes on and then goes out for no apparent reason but when this light comes on the speedo goes off also. havent had the car to an auto electrician he said it was the wheel sensore and bearing but these have been renewed yet the light still comes on but can also go off when it feels like it. cant think of anything else it could or should be as iv changed bulbs and checked all belts on the car. does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? your help would be much apprieciated as im at a loss!

was it a genuine BMW sensor? aftermarket ones are known not to work very well. If the speedo is cutting ina nd out its the NSR thats causing you problems. Its worth cleaning off the ABS ring when you fit new sensors too as dirt on them affects their operation.

i had the same thing recently, changed 2 sensors too and it was still not working. i had everything taken off and cleaned up and *fingers crossed* its been fine since.

in the worst case scenario it could be to do with the ABS computer but that should have shown up as a fault

basically the abs ring has raised notches on it. the wheel speed sensor is magnetic, it bounces a signal off the ring to interupt speed, locking of brakes etc. if the ring is faulty/broken/or has dirt in the gaps between the notches, the sensor will report a fault as it cant detect a signal that it has in its range of parameters if you like.7

bave a look about three quarters of the way down on here mate

it can drive normal for hours but then come on it seems to come on and off without any kind of reason or warning. it doesnt matter if its on for 1 hour or 5 days it just comes on when it feels like it computer says its always the NSR wheel really confused!!!
