as already said, i would say also it is a probe fault and it cannot read the temp, maybe you have a dry connection somewhere, a internal breakin a wire, or maybe a loose connection somewhere.

was nice of the garage to charge you to in the end tell you what you already know!

I replaced the outside temperature sensor, but that didn't solve the problem.
I then bought a second hand instrument panel (not knowing that you're not suppose to change them) and fitted it.........BINGO!.. it cured it, but only for 1 week when it reverted back to the original two faults.

I took it to an independent BMW specialist(together with my old panel) who checked the fuel sender unit/wiring and said that it was functioning OK, but they couldn't cure the faults.
I have also took it to a BMW main dealer who spent an hour on it and couldn't find the fault and would me to authorise a further £300 of diagnostic cash.

    Any ideas??

Hi, did you Gaz ever solve your problem?

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I have the exact same problem (and the exact same car too..).

    - Outside temperature shows -40, replaced the sensor but that didn't solve it. If I short the sensor wires, the temperature reads +50.
    - Fuel gauge indicates empty tank (with fuel light on). Both fuel level sensor seems to be ok (reading 400-ish ohms at both sensors).

Anyone got a clue what could be wrong? It seems to me the light module is powering the instrument cluster, could the light module be the cause of this?

What is the supply voltage to the temperature sensor and the fuel gague sensors supposed to be (I'm reading 3,7 V or something)?

    Any help is highly appreciated.

    regards,
    Chrisnes.

While i was testing my secondary fuel sensor i had the ignition on and as soon as i removed the cable (2pin) the external temp gauge bleeped and now shows 0c? I know i have a fault here as well as i have the dreaded -40.0c, I have changed the sensor and also checked both sensors and they are both working fine? I do not know what to do now?
