I hope this is the right section to post in, I've had a look around.....

This car is going from bad to worse, 11 days before the MOT is due and the ABS light has come on. Add to that the alarm doesn't seem to behave quite the way it should and definitely doesn't seem to immobilise the car, the electric mirrors are now just mirrors, the PDC has gone quiet as well. Tick over is also poor when hot! So I popped down to my local trusted garage this morning and just to finish the day off they, and I, can't get a response from the diag port under the bonnet.

If I can get the ABS light out then I'm hoping I can at least get it through the MOT, but without the ability to check error codes I'm a bit stuck. The light is permanently on from the moment you turn the key. I've checked both the relays and they seem fine but I suspect it's a power issue.

So has anyone ever experienced this sort of catastrophic electrical failure and if so can they give me any pointers please as I'm starting to think the loom has damage somewhere shorting it to the body.

    TIA.

For starters, don't worry about the car being immobilized !

The immob' is seperate from the alarm, so it should still be immobilized.

Anyway, in the earlier E36's, there was a drainage issue in the scuttle panel, which caused the DME compartment to flood... I didn't think this would be so much of an issue on a 1999 car, but thats where i'd start checking.

Well that's good to know, thanks.

OK, can you tell me where the DME resides please? Also, the car has only been out in the rain twice in the last year so I don't think that would be an issue, unless it's a left over from before we owned it. I'll take a look tomorrow as the wine is flowing now... Drowning my sorrows!

I've been looking through the circuit diagram and I notice there is a big grounding point under the left side of the dash which appears to be used a lot by the ABS so I'll check that as well.

There's a few grounding points behind the glovebox area - Can't think off the top of my head where they are exactly.

As for location of the DME... Go in the engine bay, behind the fusebox is a panel, remove that, and the DME is there.

Do you wash the car often ? That could also cause it to flood.
It might be dry in there now, so check for signs of water being in there.

Wine ? I'd be on the Scotch

Well interestingly enough my wife washed the car just before the ABS failed, so it's her fault anyway!

Well I found the DME, and it was bone dry as I suspected. So I took it out and checked the plug for oxidised connections just in case, but they all appear fine.

Plugged it back in and started the car but still the same running issues, so I decided to open up the cable tray at the back of the engine and found this. Are all these joins normal as to me that's a big potential failure point and is likely to be the cause of not getting a response from the diag port.

Anyway, I'll check back to the circuit diagram and start metering out the wires..

Heh, stuck with the Ouzo. We get it free when the eldest brings it back from Gibraltar which always makes it taste better....

    Hopefully I've done this right....

Quite a small resolution image - Are they joins that someone else has done to it ?

Chances are, they could be failing !

Is the car a genuine M3, or a conversion ?
