I had another go at winding the roof down manually last night. I pulled the emergency lever under the rear seat. I then wound the roof down as far as it would go. I could lift the back part of the roof with the window in it, but the boot lid cover would not open. It was still locked. Should this come unlocked when the lever is pulled? Looking at the boot lid cover motor, there are 2 very tight cables running off it (not slack). I'm wondering if the issue is either with the boot lid cover motor or sensor.

Interestingly after I put the roof back up and tried the top down button, only the back left window went down. It goes down an inch at a time. The rest of the windows stay up.

Rather than starting another thread, i'll post my woes with my Top

    Recently bought a 1999 318iS

I'm fairly well minded when it comes to cars and convertible, already owning two s2000's and now onto the e36

Where i'm stumped is, i'm gtting nothing from pressing the top down\up button..... in this reagrd i've tested the switch for continuity and it's all good

I've tried re synching the motors, the usual procedure,

    disengaged the motors,
undone the top at the front with the Allen key
folded the top into the Tonneau space
Checked the boot switch in the tonneau mechanism
pressed down the cover to allow the boot open and re-engaged the motors

I then held the close button before going to II with the key

nothing happened, the windows once went down halfway

i've checked all fuses for continuity including the one by the battery

I read bout the top button flashing red but i get nothing in that regard, just lights up when headlights on

I also bent the boot\trunk lock mechanism back in place to have it perfect....

the central locking works and all windows aswell, any help appreciated, I refuse to bring to BMW lol

plan today is to check the wiring behind the toolbox on the boot

Thanks all for contributing this thread.

My 1999 BMW E36 M3 Convertible top opened 8 inches and stopped.

Light on the switch was blinking and would go solid on pressing either up or down. However the top did nothing. Didn't make any noise of any kind.

The problem for me ended up being a blown fuse in the trunk/boot. But I had no idea before reading through this thread how to get the trunk open to see if it was the fuse.

The link to Zack's Youtube still worked and made opening the trunk a flash. Then it was a matter of finding the location of the fuse. Mine was pushed down and not visible from the back of the car. I've attached two photos showing where the fuse hides. The yellow fuse to the left is the blown fuse. The yellow fuse to the right is the new fuse installed. Hope this helps!

Here's the link to Zack's youtube again:

Here are the photos of my fuse location:

    Thanks again everyone!

Just found this thread - ive got a 335i vert 2007 plate and weirdly think my car has a mind of it's own!! The roof will go down and back up ok but sometimes it pauses halfway through the process, also the auto up windows at the end of the process will go halfway up and stop. If the car has had a good run it all tends to run smoothly so i have always assumed it was just a battery issue.
