    Hi All,

I've been having issues lately with my 1999 E36 323i Convertible and I was hoping someone could help.

Ok, first signs of problems were 6 months ago, the functionality of the fully automatic hood was intermittent. Sometimes the roof would fold down OK, and other times nothing would happen at all when the button was pressed, not even a flashing light on the button.

I took the car off the road and didn't drive it for a couple of months. When I started it up, the roof would not work at all. At this point I checked some fuses etc, and tried the roof manually. When I was unwinding the roof, the hood button was flashing so I guess the button / relay is OK. (I didn't take the roof all the way down because I was not sure how to open the back hood cover)

Next I left the car for another couple of weeks. In this time the battery went totally dead and I took it out and charged it. When I put the battery back in the front windows would not work. The back ones work fine, but the front ones do not move at all. I can hear clicking relays behind the glove box though.

I've been investigating these issues this weekend and I replaced the fuse in the boot (next to the battery). I then did the hood reset (holding the button etc). And finally I got some life to the convertible button for the first time in ages. BUT all that happens when I press it is the rear windows jerk down an inch at a time until they reach the bottom, and then nothing.

Can anyone suggest what the issue might be?

It's Weird issue. I read somewhere about someones front windows stopped working after the battery died like mine did and they had to reset the ecu, like it didn't reboot properly the first time. I'm hoping once I get the front windows working again the roof might kick into action again.

OK, if you find out anything, let me know. That would be great.

hello mate just an update..the spark has been over he plugged the computer in and its down to a sensor,(converible top lid position feedback hall sensor) whats happening is its telling the roof module that the hood is open and its gone into safety mode..i need to get a price from bmw for a new sensor...maybe its best if you spend a hour for a sparky to plug it in...dont take it to bmw tho as they couldnt read it from there machine....

Also this can be caused by frayed wiring in the boot hinge. The car things the boot is open and won't operate the roof.

Wow thanks for the information. I did suspect it might have something do the convertible boot lid sensor because I used to hear water in there and then If I drove around for half an hour it would start working again. Does anyone know how to get that open? When I was manually opening the roof the convertible boot lid wouldnt open.

    Was this directed at me?

If you have water issue see these threads.

If you want to check the boot wiring then open the boot, peel back the rubber bungs and check for damage.

ummm that could be down to a faulty micro-switch in the boot lock..its a safety device..if you leave the boot open the roof wouldnt operate...so it could even be that...peel back the carpet on the underside of boot and take the tool tray off then you will be able to see it..also like the other chap said check wiring in the bungs that go to the boot make sure there not frayed...if your storage lid doesnt open manually im almost betting its down to boot lock micro-switch.....keep us all updated mate...remember if you get one on ebay make sure its convertible one as the others dont have a micro-switch as they dont have a storage lid...
