    Hi all

So over the last day or two my original BMW 6-CD CD-Changer has stopped working. I was listening to an album and it skipped for a few seconds (like it would with a scratched CD) and then continued playing the album ok.

But the following day when I try and play any of the CDs, the display comes up with the CD number, like this for example: CD 1 -, and then after about 10 seconds it comes up saying "CD Error". I've tried changing all CDs to other CDs and tried real CDs (bought ones not CD-Rs). Still no luck.

I've replaced the fuse in case it was on it's way out, and I've checked the connections out best I can, as well as taken the CD magazine out and checking that.

I'm hoping this doesn't mean its come to the end of it's life

    Any help is greatly appreciated

Try taking it to bits and giving it a clean. Worked for me and mine was saying the same.

I hope not, wanted to keep this part of the car standard. I'll have a look at it over the weekend, if I have to I'll get an aftermarket unit, but then I'll probably end up spending money on a really good one

I've got the same problem on my 98 M3, i read about an 'easy fix' on here the other day but can't find it now!!!

I believe the guy said to try taking out the cartridge, and then locating a small switch inside the changer box itself. He said it can get stuck in position, preventing the discs from being changed around hence 'CD error' message. He suggested poking it around with a screw driver or a knife and it should solve the problem. Did with his. Just off to try it now.......i may be some time.....

Cheers for that mate, let me know how you get on. Also if you can find where you read what this other guy did it would be appreciated.

Ok, just tried the switch thing. The only thing i could find was a metal trigger on a spring which i tried moving around. It wasn't really stuck but i pushed it up and down a few times anyway. Decided whilst i was there to take the whole thing out and take the cover off. I used a camera cleaning brush with a blower on it and squeezed it into all the areas i could. Put it all back together and tried it out. It hasn't worked. I think mine is buggered. Not the sort of thing i've seen advertised on ebay either....Great!!!

If anyone can tell me where to pick one up please let me know. I'm trying to sell the car and this is the only fault.

That's a shame, I may give it a go like you but as Neal suggested and you've found, it's likely that the CD Changer is just at the end of its life - not bad for a 10+ years old though.

I've seen them on eBay, saw one a week or two. Fair bit of cash though.

About 4 weeks ago I got the 'CD Error' message on my 10 disc changer for the first time... pulled over, took the cartridge out, put it back in and in worked fine for another 2 weeks.

Then I started getting 'CD Error' every time I tried to play a CD... so I just used the radio for a few days and then I tried the CD again and it worked!

Until this Monday... and now it refuses to play anything. I think mine is finished as well Gutted.

A Harman/Kardon setup isn't much use when the CDs won't play

Anyone else have any luck with a fix??
