Hi there,I'm a new member who is at her wits end with my 1999 316i coupe.A few months ago I was driving along when it literally "died";all power cut out including battery.I managed to pull in just before someone ran into the back of me.
I have spent hundreds of pounds trying to diagnose/fix this problem.I had a valve replaced (near breather ) which was apparently sucking air into the fuel.
In the last ten months it has had a new battery, new radiator & this new valve.
It stops almost on every journey now;I find it does it more if I don't warm it up long enough in the morning..
It didn't start the other day at work (turned it on & all dials went crazy) so had to get the RAC out.He could't work out why after 10 minutes of running the engine,it just cut out...
I told him about the breather & he stripped that back & after this the car was fine.

I have had it in three garages now who cannot tell me what is wrong;I'm getting very worried that if the car stops again someone may run into me !!!

Has anyone ever heard of this problem ?
    Any help gratefully received

Have you had the codes read to check for any faults stored on the ECU?

Follow STK's advice first, then check this...

    http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...k-what-t52071/

It manifests itself as all sorts of weird electrical & running faults.

Also check the DME (ECU) is dry. It normally affects earlier cars but it's worth a look. It's in a compartment in the bulkhead, accessible from the engine bay.

There were using the wrong kit.
The needles kicking about is pointing to the crank sensor.

Have you noticed wether it occurs randomly or maybe when you go over a bump? I think complete electrical loss is pointing towards a bad earth maybe Poss an ignition fault, the ecu only deals with the engine electrics and any instruments concerning the engine, everything else like lights radio even wipers shouldn't lose power, is the battery secure?
