A bit of a this the car will start ok sometimes but then i turn it over and just get a strange noise and after 2 or 3 attempts it goes, i took it too a bmw specialist about 20 miles to get there and it started 4 times with no problem,he said it will be the starter and 350 quid to fix
I have priced a good starter for 90 quid is it that big of a job on this model he said 3 or 4 hours.
It may not be the starter the battery seems ok but would lack of charge create this problem. thanks for any help

If its a spinning sound it will be the starter motor. £350, he's having a laugh. I think the last one I fitted we charged about £150 and that was for a new one.

Autodata suggests that this job should take 1.1hours and that includes the removal of the inlet manifold and disconnecting the battery.....

I think that the garage that suggested 3 or 4 hours are exctracting the Michael, did they test the battery at all to indicate if the problem lies in that area....

You dont need to take the inlet manifold off, they only do that on left hand drive cars because the steering column gets in the way.

I think some of these bmw specialists are no better than shady under the arches type garages, saying things like if you go to bmw it will cost 600 mate.
