    Hi everybody
My interior lights are staying on when i leave the car after it is locked.
I removed the fuse for the night, next day replaced it went to the supermarket
the lights were off, came back to the car to drive home lights came back on.
This includes the footwell lights so i removed the fuse again.
By the way i know the lights stay on a little while after locking, these would stay on all night.
Any ideas would be much appreciative.

    Thanks Silverbmw

You need to inspect the wiring that passes from the vehicle into the tailgate.

The wires inside the rubber sheath are prone to breaking and can cause all sorts of electrical issues with central locking and interior lights.

If wires are broken then cut, solder and heat shrink/insulate

My occasionally come one when I hit a bump, in mine its because the door switch on the front passenger door is faulty, ain't looked at it properly.

And A20 means, open your boot
On the left, where the boot lid sits when its shut, there is some wiring that wears down and breaks, this causes all kinds of problems.

    Need a picture?

    see the wiring?

Hi there, sorry to drag this up as my first post, but i've a very similar issue, if i hit a bump or push down on the boot the interior light comes on, and stays on for ages, however when i open my doors the interior light does not come on.

I've checked out some of the wiring guides for 318ti's as there quite close to 316i models but i dont see a link between the rear boot and the door contacts, other than the Body Electronics Control Module, is it possible that it's faulty ?

I had very similar problems with the rear numberplate light, it would work sometimes and others not, then my central locking packed up. So i went to bmw and the guy told me about the wires in the boot. I stripped the cover off the wires in the boot (as pictured above) and it turned out 5 wires had broke. So i reconnected them all and central locking works, reg plate light works all the time and as an added bonus my interior boot light worked too, (it didnt work from the day i bought the car). Check all the fuses after you have reconnected wires and replace any blown ones

I know what i'm doing saturday morning so, it's crazy i've pawed over the diagrams of the 318ti's and couldn't find a link, but perhaps the short in the wires are causing the issue ..

Just a quick follow up, on my 316i the wires see to enter the boot door on the top left hand corner, it's a tough spot to work in, but once you get the rubber cover off, you should see a some what braided cable, mine looked to be in perfect condition.

So i moved on to the boot switch, located on the left of the latch, popped it out, and disconnected it, and my interior lights went out, seems the switch has failed after all these years, the light now turns on when i open the car doors.
