I bought a new ignition switch today (£34 from BMW) and found a good fitting guide on E38.org and its sorted the problems.

I was on the right track then , I didn't want to stick my neck out and say it would definitely be it as I've not experienced the problem myself, only heard of it. good to hear it's fixed .......

    Hi guys,
Would I be right in thinking that the ignition switch is in the same place in a facelift 2001 model E38 as I have some of the symptoms you have ie MFD disapearing in the binnacle, stereo in lottery mode!! I have not had chance to pull out my bm24 and have a proper look at it yet but if replacing a £39 ignition switch will fix it then I would rather spend that than the £300 to replace the BM24 lol.
    Cheers

Try and get hold of a very small socket set if you dont have one, a 1/4" drive one would be ideal due to the lack of space. I had to use a 3/8 drive and it took ages to undo one of the bolts which if i remember rightly was a T30 not a T2.5 as mentioned in the guide.
