On my 1998 318i the petrol filler flap lock will no longer lock with the central locking. If I manually lock it from inside the boot it will unlock with the central locking but not lock again. I have had the lock out and it locks and unlocks okay on a 12V battery when I toggle the polarity to it. So I guess there must be a fault in the central locking module which must toggle the polarity of the voltage to the lock when I try to lock it. Probably not worth looking at for such a minor fault...unless someone knows different?

The rear doors and boot lid are all on the same circuit as the fuel flap so if they are working OK it would suggest the solenoid, but your test seems to discount that. Try checking the voltage to the solenoid (it could be a broken wire) and check the bootlid wiring as it causes all sorts of weird electrical issues....

Well if I recall there are only two wires that go the solenoid and as it operates in one direction okay I doubt its a wiring problem. But thanks for your comments.

    Is it alignment?

If you try the lock operation with the flap open to watch the plunger does it operate?

No it doesn't. It will pull in okay if you manually pull it out but it won't push back out again and its quite free to move. I also de-mounted and laid it in the boot but still connected and it still doesn't operate correctly.
