Good evening ladies and gents, could I trouble some of you knowledgable types for a bit of info on the E36 ignition wiring?
I have one of the 'Type VR' push button ignition kits for my E36 328i coupe ('98 S plate), there are instructions included as to what wires go where from the kit, but no diagram corresponding to the car.

Here is a mocked up drawing I made from the instructions included in the kit:

If someone could give me the colours and locations of the corresponding wires in the car that would be great.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Its all very well having a push button start but am sure you are aware that your car has EWS so you would still need the key in the barrel or taking the transponder out the key and taping it to the barrel....

wire 15 red and 15 green need to go to the purple or green wire on your ignition switch located behind the ignition barrel, pin 50 green need to go to the thick black and yellow wire on ignition switch, some models however came with a thick black and green wire instead of black and yellow.

if you need any more help give us a shout on 07821223345, have fitted tons of these type vr kits.

    thanks

Stk, i'm aware of that and issues with the steering lock, no problems there I will still be using the key to position 2 then pressing the button.

I was thinking of installing the button where the cig lighter is and perhaps relocating the lighter somewhere else as I will still need the socket for my sat nav.
I'll have a proper look at in on Sunday when I actually do the install.
Thanks for the advice so far, i'll be sure to drop you a line if I get stuck.

    Thanks again, its much appreciated.

Good you using the key...however its not for the steering lock its for the EWS....You should read up on EWS before doing this push button.See this thread for more info on EWS http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...-thread-t5773/

Stk - I've also got a push button start on mine (using fag lighter), and he's using the same method as me. All ya doing is completing the starting circuit with the button instead of the key - So you still need the key on, for the EWS and steering lock.

He will have no issues what so ever with EWS and using this method.

    Good to know, Ferret, thanks.
Since you also used the fag lighter slot, where did you relocate the lighter to?

If I don't come up with a new place for the socket I may just end up hardwiring it to the sat nav lead and burying it behind the dash....

    I didn't.

I use the actual lighter to start the car.

I don't use the fag lighter enough to warrant relocation... Plus, if someone else does want to use the lighter, then the reversal process will take less than 15mins.
