My car has central locking, it has an alarm although I have never tested it. It came with a key fob but it doesnt do anything and the red light is constantly on. When I turn the ignition off and take the keys out of the ignition the red light next to the cigarette lighter on the centre console flashes a few times but then thats it. I have deemed the remote useless.

Is it worth me taking it to someone that knows about car alarms to work out what it is exactly thats not working or should I buy a new alarm with remote fobs too?

If the recommendation is a new alarm what would be my best option in regard to value for money please?

I have had my alarm receiver out today, shorted the pins on the back to open close doors and even set off alarm. I bought this key fob ( new shape three button, top button is arrow, middle button is bmw badge and bottom button is boot open ) off ebay to hopefully programme it using the step by step guide on here. I have tried it many times for about 2 hours this afternoon and still no joy to the point that I was getting fairly wound up. Is it the fob or am I a silly boy and not doing something right?

Think you might have the wrong fob there - never seen one like that with an E36 before!

Something like this is probably more likely to be what you need -

I thought that could be the issue, it was said to be for quite a few models of BMW on ebay. I may try again tomorrow just incase
