Hi everyone first post probably of many.
As above car the snap on code reader will connect to the round obd port under bonnet and can read the abs / airbag systems but wont talk to the engine management side.Could it be a fuse problem or could it be a faulty pin? Does anybody no which pin does what? help would be great.

Have you tried turning the ignition off and then back on and then reconnecting with the Engine DME(ECU)?

Also try twisting the diagnostic plug round slightly in the cars diag plug, as this will sometimes help make a better contact on the pins.

On occasions, if the service lights were previously reset using the pin short method, it could hang the K-bus used for diagnostic analysis. Happened to a member before and required a proper reader like GT1 or Autologic to reset it.
