Hi guys, just bought a beautiful e36 318is coupe sport. it has the key with the rubber buttons (3 buttons), it does not open on the remote, only if you turn the key and only opens the drivers door, i have to manually open the passenger side and boot. however the lights on the key do flash, so it is not the battery or faulty key as i have tried with both keys.

anyway, that is not all, the weird thing is that my windows will only operate when the rear demister and climate control is on. if i turn either off, the windows will not go up or down. another thing is the alarm will go off randomly when i turn the engine off, then i have to press the bottom left button on the key to stop the chirping, and THEN i have to turn the hazards on and off to stop the lights flashing! what on earth is this all about?!

PLEASE HELP!!! i would like the central locking to be working, if not keyless, atleast with the key. and also i do not want to have the climate control or demister running to operate the windows!!!

I think you need to get the codes read and go from there.

Could a simple problem or a number of seperate faults.

Sounds like a possible alarm problem. Is it a standard alarm or aftermarket.
Worth checking the wiring that passes to the boot. Peel back the rubber gaitor and check for damaged wires.

i dont think its an aftermarket alarm, when it goes off it makes a very louding beeping sound (1 beep at a time) and i can stop the beeping by pressing on the bottom left button on the key. another thing i noticed is sometimes when i turn the key on the ignition, both the windows just go down automatically (only sometimes though). This is driving me mad! please help!!

check the nsf passenger footwell under carpet for a larg wiring plug and check that its not under water if so clean it out.
and then you need to check all the fuses and earths.

If its under water then you have either a screwed heater core or leaking seals.....

do you mean the fuses under the bonnet? where are the earths i need to check? why do you guys think the central locking isnt working? the key (button on key) wont even open the drivers door. could the window problem be related to the alarm? this is crazy! sorry for being so lost guys, just dont know which way to go! anyone in london that could sort this all out for me without me having to rob a bank?

i had a e36 1993 325i that would work on the keyfob then stoped it then started to cut out on me and would not start after a lot off stress i foung the wiring to be under water folt to be leaking membrain on passenger door.
also check both door looms where they go from the door to inner off the car as my m3 has started to do this it would lock on the kefob and then the drivers door stoped working then the passenger door stoped found folt in loom where door mounts on.

Best to follow Gildersol's advice as he is the electrical genius here.I would second what he says when he says check the wiring where it passes into the bootlid as this is a common fault with wires breaking here and could cause the symptoms you are suffering
