Can I assume that if a relay clicks when it is supposed that it is not faulty??

The way to test a relay is to apply 12v to the coil while testing for continuity with a multimeter across the contacts to check if the contacts are opening/closing as they should.

However, as long as the contacts are not burnt out or something, the clicking is a fair sign that it is operating.

    What's the problem you're having?

Chances are that the coil of the relay will be on a separate supply from the demister itself, so the relay could easily be clicking while there is no voltage at the contacts. Check the fuses. Are there pin no.s on the relay?

I ahve checked voltage that relay receives and that seem ok.
The location of the relay means it is not the easiest of things to get to, otherwise I would test for continuity when demister switched on.
If the terminals inside are burnt out I would still get the click but circuit still broken??

You could still get a click as the coil is energised. What car is it?

Did you check the fuse. I have a wiring diagram for a 2000 V40 I'm not sure if it's the same but if so it's fuse 3 in the engine compt

Yeah there 2 fuses, #3 in eng comp and #12 in cabin comp, I have just tested relay, getting continuity when energised so relay is ok, must be a broken wire which I find surprising as car in excellent condition. Trip to motor factors 2moro for new wire and a couple of splices and job's a good un.

    Thanks for your help.

Might be an idea to check the wiring where it passes to the tailgate through a rubber sheath. Common for wiring to get damaged on all types of car due to all the bending and flexing..
