The A/C on my 1997 BMW 523i has stopped working (is blowing only warm air despite having been recharged) and my BMW main dealer told me the ‘pusher fan’ has packed up and needs replacing. True that the fan does not run when the A/C button is pressed with the engine running so he could have been right.
Since it is an expensive job (about £500 parts and labour) to have the replacement done by the main dealer, I thought I would check first for alternative possibilities for the malfunction and found a tip on the internet to short the middle terminal with an outer terminal in the electrical connector for the coolant temperature sensor. I did that and lo and behold the fan ran at high speed on one of the outer terminals. However, it did not run when I shorted to the other outer terminal (which I assume is for the low speed).
So I conclude that the fan hasn't 'packed up' and runs OK but it's just that the low speed relay is faulty. Am I right? My problem now is that I can’t find the location of the auxiliary fan relays so I can’t do a final confirmation by swapping the low speed relay with the high speed relay as the tip suggested. Can anyone tell me how to get to the two relays, please?
So far, I haven't been able to find a supplier of replacement relays for the fan. Any suggestions anyone?
