    I've had a search through and haven't found quite the symptoms I'm experiencing. Apologies if I have overlooked something.

    Car: BMW E39 520i Saloon

    I've had an intermittent issue which has now become more prevalent with my reverse lights not working. When the issue is present, and I put the vehicle in reverse, the rear fog light indicator on the dash will turn on and the reverse light will fail to turn on. I've also noted that when turning on position or dipped headlights, the rear fog indicator on the dash turns on also (the read fog lights do not turn on in either of these circumstances).

    I've changed the lightbulbs (one of my rear position lights was burnt out and has been replaced now also), and I've replaced the fuse per the diagram in the fuse box. I understand the next thing may be the switch in the bottom of the gear box, is that right? Aside from that, is there anything that could be causing this? In particular, the fog light indicator turning on puzzles the smeg out of me.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    yeah check the gearbox switch. the foglight issue is weird might have to check the loom with a multimeter.

    Not sure if its an issue on the E39 as well but on E36s its quite common for weird symptoms like this to be caused by the wiring to the boot lid/tailgate to be frayed or damaged, peel back the rubber boot near the hinges and check the wiring there.

    yeah on the left had side behind the trim in the boot, there is a connecter that can get corroded had worse if the rear washer pipe has leaked do to freezing and bursting the pipe.

    Thanks for the feedback. Going to have a fiddle around with the wiring in the boot first, seems like the most likely candidate at the moment, and take it from there. Will report back once I've progressed this a bit further.
