    Hi,

I purchased an illuminated gear knob for my E39 - after finding out what the positive cable was on the knob (cables are brown and green for some reason) i went to wire it into the car.

According to the manuals you tap into the cig lighter wiring using a set of two scotchlocks. When i got the gear gaiter and foam ring out the way i found 3 cables going to the cig lighter.

Does anyone know what cable is what ? There are no markings on them or clues on the plug they go into.

Alternatively any other way to wire it in ? I was wondering if you could get a multi connection plug so i could just wire it into that along with the cig lighter and plug both into the socket.

    Thanks
    Tiff

One wire is for the live (goes to the centre of the lighter body) one is the earth (on the edge of the lighter body) and the remaining one should be for the illumination. You need to tap the earth and illumination wires, not the permanent live.

OK, finding out which is the live isn't going to be easy as i can't get down to the back of the lighter unit. Ditto finding out which is the illumination - any ideas ?

Pull the lighter socket out? Comes out with a push on the E36.

Doesnt seem to come out with a push on an E39 - it folds down into the dash so prolly a bit more to it for removal.

Thanks for the info on the colour coding - will check that out tomorrow.

    Hi,

    Checked out the cables.

    There is:

    A brown cable

    A red/black cable

A red/grey (or light purple) cable

So brown will be the ground and the red/grey will be the light ?

The brown cable is a bit thicker than the other two....

As you can get to the connector use a multimeter to check which is permanent live and which is illumination.
