Right I borrowed a multimeter off a mate n had a good look last night. The dimmer switch is working fine, there’s a voltage across it. I expected this anyway coz I just replaced it the other day. I reckon its something to do with a dodgy ground somewhere, and looking at the wiring diagrams it looked like ‘X18170’ which has all the dash backlights and fag lighter/window buttons backlights on, and connects underneath the centre console near the handbrake with another ground ‘X494’. Had it all off last night n tested it – its fine. So now I’m giving up and got it booked in with an auto sparky for Saturday. At least I can tell him where I know the problem isn’t, so hopefully he’ll find it quicker and charge me less labour.
Thanks for your efforts gildersol, they are much appreciated.

Hi again. Not got any wiring diagrams and I don't intend to strip the interior to find the problem. If it's not easily fixed. i.e. a fuse or a simple earth connection I will take it to a garage. I did wonder how the chap that had the same problem resolved it when he took to the auto electrician. Thanks for your interest.

    Hi,
The fault was 2 wires under the centre console near the ashtray being trapped, wearing bare and shorting the circuit. So when I replaced the headlight switch, as soon as I turned the key it ruined that one too.
Replaced the worn wires, fitted new switch and now it all works.
One word of warning though, I was quoted £10 at best and £65 at worst for 2nd-hand switches from different scrappers. Bought a brand new one from the dealers in the end though, for £29! So I dunno where that tosspiece got the £65 price tag for a used one from. Just watch out yeah. People will rip you off if you're not careful.

    Thanks,
    Leon

Boz...Thanks for coming back with your solution, as Craig Wood looks to have very similar
    symptoms.

Craig Wood... If your number plate lights are working ok then it won't be the fuse.
It could be a faulty light/dimmer switch. It would seem unlikely that you would have the same wires trapped as Boz but it may be worth checking.
All the backlights don't use the same earth so if they're all not working it probably isn't that.
