I'll try and explain them, if pictures are needed, then i'll get some.

Basically, I was looking in the passenger footwell, and found a grey box, with a green sticker on, that has "ABS-ES" written on it... Is that the ABS ECU ?

Behind that box, is a black one, with an orange sticker, with "caution" notices on, but one word I did recognise was "Thatcham"... Is this the standard BMW alarm ?
The connectors have been disconnected, and are no where to be seen, so I can't just plug them back in and see what happens.

The BMW alarm siren under the bonnet has had it's wire cut, and the red LED next to the fag lighter doesn't light up... So I assume that I have no alarm, and no immobilizer ?

Last but not least, in the same area, but behind the footwell carpet, is a rather large black box type thing... Am I too assume this is the ECU ?

    Thanks alot,
    Ferret !

first two you've said are correct, well the alarm one is definaltey correct. I think the ecu is in the engine bay on e36's, someone can correct me in the morning

and the imobilizer is built into your key, so without your key the car is going nowhere (standard bmw alarms don't have immobilizers fitted).

    Body control module ?

My 328i is the basic model - I doubt it has owt fancy like this (But what is a body control module ?)

It's actually in the footwell, so is in the vertical position, and it has a load of wires coming from the top, I didn't investigate any further down it.
I do also know, that it has the bonnet switch wire coming out the top too....

Ecu is hidden in a compartment behind the bulkhead on the passenger side, where it can be accessed by removing the soundproofing stuff then a metal cover.

Take some pics mate and post em up i'm sure someone will know what it is. I think all bmw's have body control modules as it controls things like central locking, door switches, interior lights, and little things like dropping your windows 1cm when a door is opened.

sham - After abit of investigating, it turns out the 'body control module' you refer too is actually that thing behind the glove box that has the yellow and green plugs...

And I figured out what that thing is behind the footwell - I took it off, and it's just a piece of plastic covering the wiring loom which joins onto another wiring loom... Nothing fancy at all.

the ecu is behind the fuse box in the e36, there is some small (i think 7 or 8mm) bolts that hold a plate against the bulkhead remove these and the plate will come away revealing the ecu. I think there is on some models another ecu above the engine management one but not sure what its for

    hey,
sorry to side track (maybe i need to start a new thread?), regarding the factory alarm mine has an aftermarket one fitted, it works from a seperate key fob. i assume my car shiould have been fitted with a factory immobiliser. is this the case and would it be located in the same place as the thatcham item described above? i have a 1997 E36 touring..

    many thanks
