This is a run on from Truxx's thread about the airbag.... And got me thinking, that the airbag need's "coding" to the car.

What exactly is it coding it too ? There's only 2 things I could think it would need coding with and thats the DME or ZKE...

    Any idea's please ?

    Thanks,
    Ferret !

Me thinks the guy he has gone to is taking the mickey...AFAIK its the canbus systems thats when it needs coding....Not on the E36's...could be wrong but I don't think so

I have never had to "code" anything to the E36 srs system, they were way before all that came out. Ive replaced bloody loads of E36 airbags, pretensioners, etc
There is not even an option on my Bosch Kts for SRS adaptation on an E36....

You won't need to recode the airbag it's self Steve, but the airbag ECU under the seat will need coding to 'something'.

BUT, I think I might have answered my own question - I'm looking through the wiring diagrams, and the airbag connects to the CANBus, which goes to "Intergrated Climate Regulation" (IHKA - Heater controls), why the feck that is... When the air bags go off, does it switch the aircon on to preserve your body when your dead ?

But, along the CANBus, it goes to the EWS.... So to change the airbag ECU on the "cheap" would mean changing the airbag ECU, EWS module, key, DME.

Stk, I think he might possibly be being taken for a ride !

I didnt think the E36 had CANbus. Only the very last compact. The E46 was the first one that used it fully...

Exactly.....it didn't like I said Maybe I didn't explain myself well...I meant that its only when you have CANbus that the airbag module needs coding and the E36 didn't have this...

It would appear your right Steve, no CANBus until the last line of Compact.

The wiring diagram states "Data Link", so I assumed Data Link to mean CANBus... Obviously it's just an early form of it

Either way, the airbag ECU communicates with the EWS and heater controls via the 'Data Link'.

The module in my E36 says it will need coding to the car.... I can't remember the exact wording of it though.

I know the modules do talk to each other, eg speed signal to A/C etc.. But its very crude compared to CAN systems. Like you said Ferret, its a data link as the airbag needs to know if there is ignition power and a speed signal.
Ill dig out the info from Bosch on monday
