Hi all. My rear wiper wasn't working when i bought my E36 Touring last week (but the washer jet works fine). So I finally got round to having a look just now. The white wire that should run throught the rubber pipe at the top of the boot opening was snapped, so I joined it back together. Still no power. I've traced it down to behind the light cluster, and it's also broken there. But i can't see where it was joined to.

I traced the wires attached to the rear wiper motor: A brown, a red and yellow, a purple and black stripe, and a green and blue(ithink) stripe. These all run to behind the light cluster along with the white one.I found two wires disconnected, plugged them together but then the rear wiper came on and stayed on even with the ignition off. this also happened when i connected the white wire to the power cable.
Can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong?

Try pulling individual fuses out and see which makes the wiper stop, as you may have a short somewhere and this will help trace it.

So I tried fuses, no difference. I've played around with the wires but could only get it so that the rear wiper moved when the rear washer was activated. But then the car seemed to think the headlights were on, because when i turned ignition off it did the lights warning noise. So I've now given up! unless anyone else has any ideas?

This could be a short in the wiper stalk, telling the wiper to run continuously.

Could be a failing wiper module - It resides behind the glovebox.

Check the loom that runs from the body to the tailgate for broken/frayed wires

Got the hi brake light going again, and fiddled a bit so that the rear wiper sweeps when the rear washer is activated. I removed the fuse for rear washer jet but it still comes on. weird...
