Modis will do it, you'll need a replacement EWS box and chip, and then you can keep your existing ECU.

hi thanks for the reply, can i not resync the ecu to the original chip and ews box? im only needing to resync as i disconnected the components then reconnected and the engine didnt start, iv just invested in the inpa software off ebay that another member done a write up about. so hopefully il be able to use my own laptop to sync them again,

I saw the other post, perhaps somebody on the fourm might help, Kwempe is a proffesional auto engineer (and general BMW super master) and is based in Cambridge, he might (for a fee) get you out of your little predicament

OK, I thought you had lost a key.
You can sync ECUs to the EWS box as many times as you like, but you can't use it to add different keys to the EWS box.

The EWS is the middleman between the key chip and the ECU.

You should find it under programming options> DME-EWS alignment

iv probably got quite a few posts up related to this, loads of problems! lol cheers for the tip, but i did actually tell the old man what i had done to his car he shouted and screamed abit lol but in the end we ordered the BMW diagnostics cable for inpa off eBay following one of the links on here, hopefully that will be able to re-sync his car,

along with finding a key to sync to my car, or if i have to get a whole new ews system including dme with a set of keys and syncing that to the car, obviously im no expert but i think it will work, well hope lol

thats a thought actually can i get a second hand bmw key and sync that to my ews system or is that a no go? i also noticed that my ews module behind the glove box is a blue cartridge with a black casing and has a different connector slots than other cars, along with an unknown alarm system, where as my dads 318 which is also an r reg has the yellow ews with grey casing, does engine size make a difference for the ews?

but if i run into any problems i will message him and of course don't mind paying either long as i get the car running!

I haven't seen a blue box before, check on the side for a sticker with the name on it. I've seen them in Black and white, and they all have EWS written on them.
WI-WA is the similar one which is a wash wipe module.
