Hi all, ive got a 97 reg e36 convertible 318i and ive had a problem with my drivers window for quite a while now. when driving along, the window moves up and down slightly and the foot-well lights come on, just like it does when you open the doors.

Its been getting worse lately, the window sometimes fails to go all the way up and im having to wriggle it a bit and only then does it close. another one, as the window closes it stops and starts going back down.

its bugged me for quite some time now, ive taken it to a garage and thy cant find anything wrong with it (at the time the window wouldnt go up or down) and because of this fault with the window its also affecting my roof going up and down.

    anyone had anything similar?

    cheers, pbmw10

Could be the microswitch in the door shut. Sounds like its the drivers one, fairly cheap to replace and best of buying new than second hand.

Other than that try what stk said but before you do, try resetting the window motors by lowering windows and keeping button held for 10 secs then raising window and keeping hold for 30secs

Door microswitch is most likely with these symptoms.

Hi all, finally had time off to book my car in to get sorted. since i posted this thread my window continued to do its own thing and eventually stopped working completely and because id left it so long to get fixed the motor and the regulator broke so i got all that fixed and also got the micro switch fitted and its as good as new.

thanks for all the info guys.
