There's an alternative. There's always a third way, and it's not a combination of the other two ways. It's a different way

Yeah they did. I think during the face lift. I also heard that pre face lift had 2 rear fogs lamps but post has only 1 (drivers side). This is true with my '98 316.

The early ones won't have check control and your car probs has. How you get over this I don't know.

I swapped mine to M3 clears with check control and had the same issue. It's caused by the pin and wiring arrangements. You can swap pins over, but I wanted my fix to be reversible, so I just wired the two brake light circuits together, as that is how it's done on my previous lights (the new lights have pins in the wrong places).
I can check my wiring tomorrow if you want me to tell you which wires to join, or you can just find it with a multimeter yourself?

Just checked, I joined the Blue/Red wires from the two rear light cluster looms. They have their own grounds.

I put the connect by the passenger side rear light cluster, where the looms are close. I used scotch lock connectors so that I can remove them later, though you may wish to use a more permanent and reliable connection.
Looking at the plug, looking from in the car out the back, the plug was wired:
    Top
o o (the right here is the Passenger side)
    o o
o o <----- blue/red in left hand socket of this row
    o o
