I have read that the zke module can control doors, interior lights, windows, locking. I have removed all these systems in preperation of transplanting remaining basic loom / engine/ box to a classic replica replica.

The zke is still fitted - I am not clear whether or not I need to keep it or whether I can remove it/ remove all wires to/ from. My replica does not have elec windows/ locking etc and my target is simpler the better subject to the engine still running - and lighting.

I guess I could simply unplug it and see what still works ! I am keeping the wiper system, heater/ blower and horn but thats about it other than engine loom, and lighting (indicators/ brakes/ heads etc) plus instruments.

So is the ZKE function essential to keep? Can I remove it without buggering up something else ?

"So is the ZKE function essential to keep?" No.
"Can I remove it without buggering up something else ?" Yes (The standard alarm might not work as expected though)

It's merely used for interior functions, such as windows, central locking, heated mirrors, heated door locks, interior lighting, sunroof, etc etc. Its also interlocked with the standard BMW alarm (It'll tell the alarm when a door has been opened). But it won't stop the car from running !

If you really want to see what stops, then disconnect the ZKE, and use the car !
