    Hello
My 525tds has had to go into the garage as the alternator has packed-up the problem i am having is the garage has said i have the choice of either 95amp or 140amp. They have said they dont know which one is fitted to the car at the moment as it has no markings, i have phoned BMW who dont seem to know even with the chassis number, and the garage are reluctant to order either until i know which one it is, as ordering the wrong one my have an adverse affect on the car???.
how do i find out which one i am suppose to fit to my car? i have had a look on realoem and it just gives you the choice between the two.
please can someone please help on this matter?

    thanks in advance

I'm really surprised that the garage doesn't carry an inductive amp clamp meter with hold function. Cheap as chips to buy nowadays like this example...LINK, and all they have to do is clamp it around the +ve battery cable, keeping in mind that alternators run at an average 60% of total output. So if you need 84 amps altogether, then your alternator should be rated for 140 amps..etc. Another way is you can simply add the amp requirements of all your components together to get your number, but that can be a bit difficult to find out in some cases.

It DOES NOT require a heavy duty alternator.
