just to update, i have left the battery disconnected. tomorow i will re connect, boost the battery with jumper cables to get good voltage above 13.7, then try again to re code the dme/ews.

only fault code is d1(hex) = 209(dec) = immobilizer controll module - incorrect signal.

I have also found tis PDF guide to ews. Seems very usefull.
p.s i am tempted to get another ews module of auction/breakers. however just to confirm this WILL NOT WORK because the ews MUST be coded to the car VIN as from factory? and there is no way to re code used ews modules?

It'll be OK with a different VIN number, they say order one with the VIN so it matches the current records of the keys available, and BMW can supply more keys if needed.

What you would need to rule out the EWS box is a new (or s/h) EWS box, and a key that matches it.
Those 2 are linked. Plug them in, and first off, you should get nothing working at all.
Swap the key chip from the new key into the current car key, and it should then crank over, but not start.
That will show the EWS box is happy with the key.

It still won't start though, as the ECU isn't synced to the EWS.
Carry out the sync, and then they should all be happy.

Having a different VIN number in the EWS won't upset anything.

Right after more investigation it is still not starting.

I have tried another ecu in the hope for the D1 code to be cleared but to no avail.

Been through all ews/dme coding, successful.
All keys mach and in operation.

The fuel pump is working and fuel rail has pressure.
The coil is not sending sparks. (Could not see spark with plug attached)

I did an ohm test on the cam sensor by the vanos unit and pin 1 and 2 (middle and right when looking at plug) gave 5 ohms @ 20k setting.

Autodata states 12.5ohms which is considerablly less in my opinion..

When I remove the ews module it knocks starter off and nothing when cranked..
When replaced it allows it to crank..

I have a feeling they just go open circuit when busted, and it should give a code anyway.

Try syncing one ECU, then read the EWS box for it's serial number, then swap ecus, and try a sync again, and check to see if the number in the EWS has changed.

That will show you if it is syncing.

I did an ECU swap on an M3 earlier today, first read with the ECU pluged in gave EWS manipulated as an error, and after syncing, it worked ok.

BMW kits says sync EWS/DME, then switch off the ignition for 10 secs, then start the car.

    Hi, update.

I had snap-on solus kit on it.. didnt even have the option to ews/dme sync.
Very let down by this kit as i was hearing alot of things about it.

Lauch x431 will be getting an email telling them that machine is saying sync successful, but in reality its not.

In the end i got a ecu + matched ews unit + matching key inc chip + antena ring, plugged it in. Engine fired up straight away.

    All is well.

I cant thank 'the end' enough.. top man for all his help and advice.

And everyone else who helpd out.
