I am slowly stripping electricl systems from the car to leave only basic lights/ engine systems prior to using them in a replica. So lots of pulling things oput and tracing back/ removing.

I have found a small light blue box fitted inside the drivers door pillar at knee height , supplied by two wires. the box has captive screws, the heads `sit into` slots in the pillar. The box is marked `top`- is this something to do with the airbag ? it is probably 2 inches square.

Have not yet removed the airbag- would hate to pull out the blue box whilst sitting in the drivers seat, and set the airbag off !
so what is the blue box ?

I'm struggling to think what you mean (without ripping my car apart)... Don't suppose you have a photo of it ?

And for the airbags, it's under the rear seat !

I broke my Saloon for parts, removing the entire loom, but don't recognise that... As Ronnie said, is there a part number for it ?

Could it be something specific to a diesel ?

Hi all, unidentified blue box part number is BMW 0043C and lower down 8350 284 2, above that 61 31.

If i shake it in the vertical plane- it feels like a ball bearing moving up and down. No noise or movement apparent if shaken horizontally. Could it be for sensing the car upside down/ no impact to set off the airbag ? Description being a small blue cube, marked on 2 sides with `top` and an arrow. maybe 2 or 3 cm per side, fitted just inside the door pillar adjacent to te drivers knee- 2 small wires running back under the dash,

    It's an emergency switch.

Give it a good rattle when driving to start the emergency.

It could well be a cut out as a diesel engine can run by itself, so that could cut the fuel supply.

It won't set off the airbag - The sensors under the rear seat !!!

It'll cut the fuel off in the event of an accident... Or to "save fuel when upside down" - Although, I suspect, your MPG will be the least of yours worrys when your upside down.
