    hi,
I am stripping all non essential electrics prior to transplanting loom and engine/ box into a classic replica.

With the column shroude gone I can see a small green collar around the inition lock, and two wires running down to a small black box a few inches below the lock. I assume therefore the key is security mapped with a chip ?

I am hoping to use my classic car ignition lock and key-Is there a way of dispensing with the security system on my bm so I can use any lock and key ?

(maybe use an older ecu that is not matched to a key ???? or is the ECU AND pump matched to the key in which case no hope!)

Easiest way is to split open your original key and get the chip out, then tape the chip to the collar. This way EWS will always validate the key even though it isn't there anymore.

thanks, sounds simple and sound ! so I could pull the wires and black box through to under the bonnet, do as you suggest and tape the chip into the collar, and put them onto the ecu tiucked away and that is it ? Do you know if the EWS (?) system extends to the pump ? lStill pondering on whether an older ecu would also work if I got stuck in any way...lots for sale on ebay but none appear to be sold with a key / chip/ black box?)

All the info on EWS is in my guide, including the BMW EWS Tech Manual...

Yes, you can just pull them through, not sure how much cable there is though!

I recall someone did (or was considering) an ECU swap for the same reason somewhere on the forum recently. You might want to search the 3 Series & Auto Elec forums.
