Cheers for the help with the plugs, think i might bite the bullet and order a control unit as my diagnostics wont talk to it

Matt, check you have 12v at pin 10 (red wire) of the 10 pin plug on the control module. I've found the problem with mine - damaged fuse holder to the live supply of the control unit!! The cable runs from the battery in the boot although it does look a little aftermarket (Gildersol, thanks for pointing me in that direction) the handbook suggested fuse 35 under the bonnet was for 12v to the control box but when we chased the wire back we discovered it ran off to the battery and the fuse holder had broken up inside, even though the fuse was good the was no live to the control box.....

Thanks for all the help with this guys. As yet I haven't tried the fully auto control box I bought but I will, just for future reference. Matt if the fully auto control box does work and your problem turns out to be the control box then I have this one, cost me £35 delivered........

    Thanks again.

    Dan

djstanley...thats great you've got it working. I have a few different diagrams for the vert roof so I knew that sometimes the fuse was in the front (F35) but also could be in the boot (F49), but after some other input from convertible owners I was thinking it was maybe a U.S. thing. It's just another thing to remember in the future when anyone else has a similar issue.
So is everything working fine now, or have you still to repair the fuseholder

For reference, this is the pic I was originally going to post. Is this where your fuse is?

169Matt...lets see if we can get yours working now.

Yes, that's the fuse! There's actually three like that on my car, none of which look all that original, possibly from a previous ice install.....I haven't chased the others to see where they go but I will before I put the interior back together!.... I just replaced the holder with a spare and it's all good.... happy happy happy.....and the money I was expecting to have to spend on the roof can now be spent on some rims!!

For future reference the fully-auto roof control module I bought that came from a 97 M3 Evo cabriolet does not work in my 1996 320i semi-auto roofed car.
