    Hi,
my 328iSE 1996 simply won't start, starter motor doesn't turn but all ignition lights, headlights radio etc work fine. Had to get recovered by the AA and thier guy said it was the immobiliser, (he tested the starter motor - it turned ok), AA guy said that one could 'bypass' the immobilser by bridging the plug but the wiring colours weren't the same as his system told him so he couldn't do it!

Any help much appreciated, hope I have posted to the correct forum!

I would check the engine earth first mate. This runs from the drivers side engine mount to the drivers side chassis leg. These corrode and cause these symptoms. Try running 1 jump lead from a metal part of the engine to a good point on the body, one of the nuts on the strut top will do. When you have done this, try and start the car....
I had the same problem with a customers E36 last week....

P.s Ive moved the thread to the auto electrical section for you...

OK thanks for reply etc, tried that but still no joy, turning key nothing happens, ignition lights etc are on ok and stay on when key turned.

You say the car 'simply won't start', but what is the history behind it. Did it start every day then one day nothing? Were there any symptoms leading up to it, or have you bought the car like this?

Problem solved! decided to check other things and noticed that the trip computer/clock etc wasn't lit up, checked the fuse labelled 'clock' and it was blown so replaced and bingo! not only did trip computer etc come on but the starter motor turned over & engine started up first time! :

Not sure I understand the link between the above but thought I'd share it in case other people ever come across it!

Thanks Steve & Gildersol for your responses.

(Gildersol, no car had been working fine, wouldn't start after I filled up with petrol, was stuck at side of pump, much to annoyance of other punters).
