    Hi all,

I've just picked up a rather neglected '96 328i coupe. It's been stood for around 2 years so as you can imagine, I'll be facing some issues

Firstly - of course the battery was dead, so I hooked up the jump leads and had power briefly (ignition lights on). Turned the ignition off and back on again a few minutes later and the lights stayed off and I have no power to anything.
Is there a "master" fuse anywhere that would prevent all electrics working? Could this be an immobiliser issue? I would've thought I'd see some dash lights if it were but I'm an absolute BMW novice.
This is, of course, assuming it has an immobiliser fitted. The alarm is a BMW 2L type with an AC38 type fob. The car key looks like it had batteries fitted at some point, but no longer does. It does like it might be a transponder type though.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Do the sidelights work?
Do the windows go up and down when you open them by that half inch?
    Do the interior lights work?
    How about central locking?
    Hazard lights?

Just to get an idea of whether there is power at the right end of the car just in case you have a dud earth lead or terminal or something.. You didn't connect it the wrong way around or anything? If so crude circuits like side lights really don't care which way power goes through them.

If abcolutely nothing works then might well be a basic battery power / connection issue.

Did you connect the leads under the bonnet or in the boot?

A combination of knackered battery and corroded jump leads. I bought a new battery this morning and it fired up first try!
    Thanks for the pointers.
