I purchased my car 1996 BMW E36 320 touring back off the insurance company after a write off - only door dented, but they left the key in the ignition, and when I did this once before it would not start and had to mess about with the key fob to get it going

I never used the key fob / alarm immobiliser as it always set the alarm off after a minute or so

Basically the engine whizzes over very fast (as it did before) and will not fire

i have tried all sorts of combinations with the fob - it makes the red light on the gear tunnel flash, and then stay on - and opens / closes the doors but nothing fixes it

I have also disconnected the battery for 10 mins as I seem to recall I did that once

    can anyone help

    thanks

It sounds like it might have just flooded, remove the fuel pump fuse [number 17 I think] and spin the engine over, it should start trying to fire as the plugs start to dry out as it stops trying to fire put the fuse back in. Or take the plugs out and dry them out.

If the ews key had packed up it would not crank the engine so try the above first and see how it goes.

When you turn the key to ignition can you hear the fuel pump prime? Short buzz that comes from under the rear seat behind the driver seat.

Also, It has been known on occasions for the car not to start due to the ECU compartment becoming waterlogged
